A DIN connector is a type of cable connector used for computer keyboards,
mice and other connections. It is named for Deutsches Institut für Normun,
which translates to the German Institute for Standardization.
There are a variety of DIN connector types, including the 9-pin connector.
- The most common DIN connectors are the 6-pin DIN, which is known as a PS/2 connector, and the 4-pin DIN, which is known as an S-Video connector. Other DIN connectors are the 5-pin, 8-pin and 9-pin connectors.
- The 9-pin DIN connector is not common. It was used in the Sega Mega Drive II video game system and is used by some Nvidia video cards and Logitech computer speakers. Some computer mice also use 9-pin DIN connectors.
- 9-pin DIN connectors are uncommon, so you may find yourself in need of an adapter that can connect a device with a female 9-pin connection to a device with a different type of DIN. Several companies make specialty cable with a 9-pin connector on one end and a 6-pin connector, for example, on the other end.
